Lamb Tagging at ICA

Ever wondered how we know the dam and then sire of each ram? By tagging at birth.

Ewes are set-stocked in single-sire mating paddocks and then recorded as having been mated to that ram. When lambing comes around we tag EVERY lamb at birth and record the dam number or Visual Identifier [VID – the big floppy tag]. The ewes VID correlates back to the sire once the data is processed by SIL. The accuracy of parentage is improved by tagging at birth as opposed to screening in, where ewes may have stolen other lambs or just lost their own.

Sam talks us through some of the key things he’s looking for when he’s tagging.
